Why should Australians’ celebrate A Taste of Harmony?
Whether standing at a BBQ, kneeling on a tatami mat or seated at an elegant restaurant, eating is fundamental to living. Elevating the quality of our food and taking time to enjoy it is a simple way to infuse our daily lives with joy.
How does food bring people from different backgrounds together?
In 1995 I fulfilled one of my dreams and went to a live-in Cookery Course in Italy. I was the only Australian in the group, however as the week went by a great camaraderie developed in the group. We would spend the day having lessons and then spend long mealtimes enjoying the results of the classes. In one week we spent more hours together than one would spend with a best friend over a year – just as many do at work these days. I have continued to travel and then share my food experiences with people back home through classes, radio and journalism.
Why are you supporting A Taste of Harmony?
I absolutely believe that sharing food is an important way of breaking down cultural barriers and I love to have people to eat at my home. I am always interested in learning about other cultures and their ways, traditions and rituals with food.
Why is the Italian culture and cuisine so important to you?
My experience with Italian families in my community was one of great warmth, conviviality and generosity when it came to food. I loved that they carried on traditions from their place of birth and had a great love of food rather than just eating to live. I enjoyed working in their kitchens as they shared their knowledge with me.
How do you live the A Taste of Harmony philosophy?
I say that my interest and work in the food industry has been my currency to expand my horizons, and provide many stimulating and exciting experiences, friendships and understanding. Long may it last.
