"I believe Australia’s multiculturalism – where we celebrate our cultural differences and respect common values – has become a role model for other nations"
Why is Commonwealth Bank supporting A Taste of Harmony?
As one of Australia’s largest employers, Commonwealth Bank wants to provide an inclusive workplace for all our people, and it’s a great opportunity for us to lead by example – we encourage other organisations to get involved too.
What are the benefits of having a culturally diverse workforce?
At Commonwealth Bank, we have a very diverse group of employees who provide excellent customer service to an equally diverse customer base. Diversity in our workforce provides other benefits as well, including better problem solving, risk management and innovation. Cultural diversity is an important part of our overall approach to diversity and inclusion.
Tell us a little bit about your own cultural background
I was born a Turkish Cypriot and migrated to Australia with my parents in 1968. As a 10 year old with no English, I was given an opportunity for a better life in Australia. Over the past 44 years, I believe Australia’s multiculturalism – where we celebrate our cultural differences and respect common values – has become a role model for other nations. I am a proud Australian with a rich and diverse cultural heritage in a true multicultural society.
Personally, why is celebrating cultural diversity important to you?
I’m passionate about cultural diversity and I’ve been an active member of the Victorian Multicultural Commission for a number of years now. I’m involved in many key cultural events throughout the year, and speak regularly on the positive impact of cultural diversity. To me, it’s all about sharing stories and connecting with people – this helps me in the workplace, and also with my customers. It’s also why I’m so excited about A Taste of Harmony this year.
How will Commonwealth Bank be celebrating A Taste of Harmony?
It’s exciting that this is the second year Commonwealth Bank has been involved with A Taste of Harmony and our people are already planning menus and team events to celebrate. I expect we will have lots of different food at our many sites across Australia, and I can’t wait to see the photos!
