Christina Batista
Masterchef Series 5 contestant

"Cooking is therapy and I love that you learn by making mistakes and experimenting with food and flavour"
Christina is a modern day mum with a fifties inspired flair for fashion. She lives with her partner, Kate, and her two kids, Damian (9) and Anabelle (6).
“My kids are spoilt when it comes to what they eat. They think what we have for dinner is normal for all kids. I love that idea and hope to inspire families out there to make it a reality, breaking the stereotype of what constitutes affordable family dinners.”

Cooking is therapy for Christina, and she loves that you learn by making mistakes and experimenting with food and flavour. When her son was diagnosed with autism, life took a dramatic turn. It became necessary for Christina to become a stay-at-home mum and ensure his needs were met. Life in every other respect was put on hold but they’re beginning to re-establish their place in the world.
“We have our good days and our bad, but that’s in keeping with every other family out there. It is so incredibly important to me that I show my kids through word and deed that we can overcome adversity in any shape or form.”

Christina’s dream is to cement her place in Australia’s food scene by sharing a more inclusive understanding of the classic Western European flavours and modernising the way they’re applied.
“The food scene in Australia has grown leaps and bounds in the last decade but there are still some rather dated perceptions I’d like to tackle – like for example that all the Portuguese eat is chicken! Portugal has a coastline that runs the entire length of the country and we have a love of seafood that is second to none. But ultimately for me it’s all about taking classic flavour combinations and elevating them for a contemporary audience.”
